Normally, no — there are no internal border checks when traveling between Schengen countries.
The Schengen Area operates as a single border-free zone, so you can move freely between member states once you’ve entered.
However, there are a few important exceptions you should know about 👇
🌍 1. No passport checks at most internal borders
You can travel between Schengen countries by:
• Train
• Plane
• Bus
• Car
without going through immigration again.
This is one of the biggest conveniences of the Schengen Agreement.
🚨 2. Temporary border controls may occur
Some Schengen countries occasionally reinstate border checks for:
• Security reasons
• Large events
• Migration control
• Health emergencies
Countries that have done this in recent years include:
• Germany
• France
• Austria
• Denmark
• Sweden
• Norway
These checks are usually temporary and targeted, not regular.
🛂 3. Random identity checks inside Schengen are allowed
Police in any Schengen country can conduct spot checks.
They may ask for:
• Passport
• Residence permit
• Identification document
This is especially common at border regions, transport hubs, and airports.
So always carry your passport with you — even when traveling between Schengen states.
✈️ 4. Airlines still do ID checks
Even though there are no border controls, airlines may still require your:
• Passport
• Boarding pass
This is for security purposes, not immigration.
💡 Outbound Singapore Tip
If you're travelling across multiple Schengen countries, always keep your:
• Passport
• Visa (if required)
• Travel insurance
• Accommodation details
Digitally and in print.
This ensures smooth travel even during random checks or temporary controls.
